A Community Fit for Children: A Focus on Young Children in Waterloo Region is a report on the status of the health and well being of young children and families in Waterloo Region. The child development information shared in this report is the most extensive neighbourhood level information we have related to children and families in the Waterloo Region.
Looking through the report, you will see that we have much to be proud of in our Region. We are doing better than most communities in Canada in supporting healthy child development; the local economy is booming, we have numerous community resources available for families with young children, and Waterloo Region out performs many other Canadian communities across the key indicators of child development.
And yet, there is still more to be done. An unacceptable number of families live on low income, and results from the Early Development Instrument show that 1 in 4 young children in Waterloo Region are vulnerable to experiencing some form of developmental difficulty that may hinder their success in school.
We know our community can do better than this. It is our intention - in providing the community with useful information about the health and well being of the children in the Waterloo Region - that you, our readers, will use this document, in your own unique capabilities, for action.
All children, in all our neighbourhoods, need supportive families and supportive communities.
